Being the gigantic sweetheart that he is, he of course had something amazing up his sleeves. He planned a surprise weekend getaway to Ojai, CA. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana;">We left late Friday night and traveled by night, like western bandits fleeing across the desert. Alas, we arrived at the surprise location. Just off the "main road" in Ojai was our home for the weekend, <a href="http://ojairanchoinn.com/" target="_blank">The Ojai Rancho Inn</a>.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana;"></span><br />

<span style="font-family: Verdana;">Imagine Sunset Magazine Marketing and Instagram had a baby. The offspring would be this precious roadside hotel. So many simple details that made it beautiful and unique. Upon checking in the uber hippie chick offered us incense to cleanse our room. Derek got into the "cleansing" and showed a pyro side to him I have never seen before.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Verdana;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana;">After enjoying our morning brew, we decided to head into town to grab a bite to eat. We used our favorite mode of transportation, bike (duh). The inn even had cute little white bikes to borrow.</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-family: Verdana;"><em>bikes on bikes on bikes</em></span></div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana;">We rode down the street to a fantastic little bakery, <a href="http://www.kneadbakingcompany.com/KNEAD/KNEAD.html" target="_blank">Knead</a>. Surrounded by locals and the pet dogs, we enjoyed a lemon riccota tart (basically lemon cheesecake for breakfast).</span><br />

<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana;">After breakfast, it was time to work off that little pastery. We headed up into the hills for a mid day hike to a waterfall. The further up we went, the further away it felt from all our problems. It was so peaceful and quiet.</span><br />

Looking forward to many more adventures with you!</span></div>

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">Last Christmas, Derek gave me a plane ticket to New York City for mid-May. The trip was to be two fold, one for Kebra's (Derek's sister) graduation from Yale and two to see Manhattan, which neither Derek or I had been to before. Finally after months of waiting, it was time for the big trip to the big apple! Here are a few pictures of our time back east. </span></div>

Blessed with a roommate that loves to cook (and is darn good at it too). We have a non-contractual agreement that she cooks dinner and I clean up afterwards. I will pop my head into the kitchen to chat and refill my wine glass while she slaves over the stove preparing a delicious meal for us BOTH to enjoy. I am super grateful for her cooking.</div><div><br /></div><div>Then the inevitable happened, she went on a vacation. Leaving me home alone for 4 whole days to feed myself. Lost and confused, the first night I traveled back in time to my "college cooking" and prepared a sad meal of cheese melted between a tortilla shell via the mircrowave. After 15 minutes of eating this pathetic meal, I was still hungry. Weird. I topped off my night's dining with a bowl of frosted mini wheats. The roomie would be disappointed. Night 2 was a little better, I bought a frozen California Kitchen Pizza and a bottle of wine. At least this meal had a theme. We'll call it Italian. Night 3 I skipped dinner all together. I had a big burrito from a man in a van named Jose for lunch. Don't worry, it was legit (I think). </div><div><br /></div><div>It was brought to my attention by a loved love that this was my opportunity to rise to the occasion of cooking. Prove it to myself that I wasn't a complete loser in the kitchen and prepare an actual meal for myself, all by myself. Feeling motivated from this pep talk, on day 4 I cooked.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="text-decoration: underline;"><br /></span></div><div>The decided meal for me to tackle was 2 fold. How ambitious, go big or go, uh, out of the kitchen. Boyfriend helped me pick a meal that was still in my league. Settled over an email, Breaded'n Baked Zucchini Chips and Garden Fresh Lasagna would be my dinner.</div><div><br /></div><div>I pretended like I had gotten a killer work-out in before heading to the local QFC, meaning I took off my make-up, put on work-out clothes, and went to the store appearing to have just hit the gym. Even if it was a lie, it made all the calories I was soon to consume seem justifiable. I found my victims (groceries) which took way longer than it should have. Multiple trips down the same aisle. Bellevue housewives were judging. Whatever, I just worked out and that was my cool down lap. Finally I was homeward bound for an adventure in the kitchen.</div><div><br /></div><div>One final text of encouragement and I was off...</div><div><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 248px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi0km3Bhmf66vJRRp6kNGBFiURlmCPSikjj7yNarMj3used3Xu8UzkIRrmGnG-PKSZwudlnAcqvRs7SyHISOSEcLCcMI-5ElNtvMRcUtpHjN0_NAhe3WyOd20eZyhZ8G5RE7DEq-oG6nRc/s400/dinner1.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5675076203442897586" /></div><div><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 298px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjReYQCDMxXOOCqHroSJ_03l3S506FKuVB4s5uQ_ASov257pSGhJn8TJ7pwuMU7Mrb8hzJ6R9rLxe2D08iX2rFJViQU6sRGkRkhep118lxs9GWs4WvjrBbCQAXMAqacTU4vgZvjHicsXaw/s400/dinner2.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5675076207585979634" /></div><div><br /></div><div>Cooking meat is scary. I feel like there are so many unwritten rules when it comes to cooking meat, poltry, etc. You have to get the right temp/color/moisture. Some meats don't require cooking all the way, others it is mandatory. And god forbid the thing is frozen, I will be completely lost on where to start. Luckily, tonight's dinner called for ground beef, which I remember my mother saying, you must cook all the way. No pink. Ok, got it.</div><div><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="text-decoration: underline; "><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhh98cxCSge5XtzsFbt-jyKwSsdlrYM_1Yc8-t0yr9fDAWhfE3uEXDkHYeaLAzWPdHIadU-ucPEpJmCPe2qKi_u0GdWxe4p99ik-lZHtzu9nd-UXDkHbqWOitNG2kLdDZ5cCmqhAAG_b_A/s400/dinner6.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5675076382002755298" /></span></div><div><br /></div><div>I doubt I am alone when I say that having a glass of wine while cooking is a must. Who am I kidding, I had bread because I love carbs. The bread and oil alone could have been a satisfactory meal for "day-1-of-missing-roommate's-cooking Erin", but this wasn't the case tonight for "food-network-motivated Erin".</div><div><br /></div><div> </div><div><img style="text-decoration: underline;display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 400px; " src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXieo3OhC2Q4TdQC3lvi3HH_vZRTpr3OFck-yIAyC1bJR1l01v3eTkATP1xRu42QkQCoK8bjzbLSRHyH7W0BoFbhFvc22jSAVbc_dga_aIFpajW3GGDrhiHV_ndCQpRSQJ88xVT0cBh2g/s400/dinner4.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5675076217230600546" /></div><div><br /></div><div>You see that very large knife, well I managed to use it with injuring myself. I am a very "organized" cooker. I like to pre-measure everything out well before it is needed, as if I were on a cooking show or something. I spent way too much time making all my slices of zucchini, bell pepper, tomato symmetrical. The only thought getting me through this dinner was "it is just following directions, I can follow directions", oh and my stomach growling. My favorite season shift is summer to fall. You can't beat orange leaves, pumpkin spice lattes, boots, and a chill in the air. This is not my first experience with this seemingly cute and easy structure on my forehead. I had bangs for a majority of my college experience. That is why I can confidently say there is an intense science behind them. Short, long, full, swiped, tappered, etc. </div><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5L0KvZbTXfCJtYwpVVTw0iR909OxmkMDKA7Ch57p4IqyMFbZqGLt3SC_tAzR-NtwdRpzbT_41w7tQ3Z0II5sQLuIa_HXjrf_s9jcOaarPoIgXK8DaQfjoTu2DQhyT6YupMIejrlKMyYE/s400/With+Bangs.png" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5593040704934719122" /><div>I have been quite enjoying the new do. Getting a few complements on them. One nice gentleman told me that my "bangs are bangin". Then after a some time had past with the bangs I decided to pull them back one day (they are so versatile).</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlcuhSWKW-bxNflkmN-F9Atj3FjmAzboKhpRm8FK6TBIMcQTUjaVpYB2SsdK1rywkQufZy2YZ9Y8CUQ-ahOxXyrMM_cN0wSzinBkW8vixd3OHTITKEY1fPpKrmKEMoCk1_IyZfqYXUqq8/s400/hair+back.png" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5593040701057350322" /><div style="text-align: left;">I went to the mirror to admire my hair (think Snow White's evil queen), when I noticed something that was less than fairest of them all. I spotted a stage 2 UNIBROW!</div><div><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixG4PVHKScCml_bnO2I6YBDiuDDT-0dYo1i_nJ8kt6SCZBhxkLqKVvJ9fjk7Y8lJVyZuQz7oAPnpKKBZFs3yJeelas7TaD_2C1Pp_5mVYZCU8uqvFO0juuC9A_OJDtWtHsZf1ad3n7DKk/s400/up+close.png" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5593040704137994210" /></div><div>How could this have happened? I normally consider myself a pretty well groom lady. How could I let that gab between my eyes coming like my neighbors lawn? And then it dawned on me. The new hair cut was hiding my eyebrows! The vail was allowing these pesky hairs to grow unplucked without me even noticing. Sneaky eyebrows.</div><div><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjEbXLWIW8SvbiDNyl0o-OzB7X8s7B8KY8HbJZRpTNlD_i5xL94_nEQJYX68VnYeqa0dwHuLawxvsclVAxP-Wky-G8l8oW6bl87JQlW8HxhiASaVusiDu2EtOKzI4SLpqxexz3aIL7Prak/s400/Nooooo.png" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5593040701798763810" /></div><div>Shamed to have been so fooled, I took vengeance on the unibrow. Mercy less plucking. Moral of the story is, while bangs are often fun, cute and playful, don't doubt that they are hiding some scary (hairy) secrets underneath. </div>EMillerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13987287452528560521noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6505883685496314758.post-39855384584416544132011-03-27T23:01:00.002-06:002011-03-27T23:17:35.527-06:00Sunny Commute<div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'trebuchet ms', verdana, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; border-collapse: collapse; color: rgb(51, 51, 51); line-height: 18px; -webkit-border-horizontal-spacing: 2px; -webkit-border-vertical-spacing: 2px; ">There really is nothing better than a sunny day in Seattle. Who doesn't love weddings? I know I have been a fan of the event ever since I first saw my mother in her own wedding gown (<a href="http://millerin.blogspot.com/2009/08/happy-anniversary.html">picture shown in previous post</a>). I have always been very passionate about all the details, logistics, and the execution of this sacred ceremony. And then I meet someone who was even more passionate than myself. That person is my best friend, Liz.<div><br /></div><div>Ever since Liz and I were young girls making veils out of paper towel for our stuff animals, it obvious how important this day was going to be for us both and that it would be mandatory that we help each other with the other's wedding.</div><div><br /></div><div>The chain of events that happen after this childhood decision are as follows:</div><div><br /></div><div>Best friend meets boy, best friend and boy date, best friend and boy date for a long time, boy starts ring fund, best friend gets extremely excited about ring fund, best friend and boy take a trip to where they met, boy asks best friend a very big question, best friend says YES, wedding plans commence, I visit best friend, best friend's turn to ask a question, I excitedly accept invitation to be best friend's Maid of Honor, champagne bottles pop.</div><div><br /></div><div>I have attended many weddings, been in a handful of ceremonies, and finally will be the Maid of Honor at the wedding I have been most excited for, second to my own. I have begun to consider myself a frequent flyer with having taken over a hand full of plane trips during the 2010 year. Being a new condesure of traveling by air, I decided to try out Virgin Airlines. Ok, that is a lie. It was the cheapest flight to Los Angeles, but I was thrilled to book this flight and experience the unique trip.</p> <p class="MsoNormal">And that it was, unique.</p> <p class="MsoNormal">The check in station at the airport had somewhat of a retro hip coffee shop vibe to it, with indie music playing and friendly hipster attendant with black frame glasses asking if I need help with anything.</p> <p class="MsoNormal">Once through the dreaded TSA inspection and at Gate A6, I found the red glamour of Virgin America to be warm and welcoming, but also had a status of elite value. They offered to check my carry on luggage for free, I in turn offered to be their best friend. The time came to board the big bird, or as it turned out to be, get into “the club”. The red velvet ropes and purple-blue track lights lead me to 8F where I rocked out (in my head) to the bumpin tunes that was playing on the overhead. I half way expected to be sitting next to Will.I.Am, but in turn shared the row with a 4 year, also named Aaron. Bet he still appreciates the Black Eyed Peas.</p> <p class="MsoNormal">Each seat had a screen in the back of it with interactive activities you can participate in during the flight. I particularly loved the Google Maps, where I could watch the plane travel across Washington, Oregon, and down south through California. If not choosing to watch T.V, recent blockbusters, or even shop online, and instead watch a map for almost two hours is wrong, then I don’t want to be right.</p> <p class="MsoNormal">A few other fun features I loved about this flight include, outlets below each seat to plus in devices, ordering drinks from the screen on your seat, the (surprisingly) entertaining safety video at the start, and the fact that I didn’t hate my life on this flight.</p> <p class="MsoNormal">If I had it my way, I would fly Virgin American every time I travel. We would be inseparable. We would be like Sonnie and Cher, Erin and VA, as I would endearingly nickname my newest BFF.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>Unfortunately, with the exception of this trip, I have “wallet restrictions”. There was some serious complications with my computer being held hostage at Apple, lack of "personal" use for the work PC, and a tinkle bit of laziness on my part. But never you fear, I am back.</span></div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-family:Helvetica;font-size:medium;"><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div>Let's rewind, shall we...</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div>I work a lot. So much that I actually worked every single day in June. That's right, not one day off. This intense work schedule has made me appreciate a day off more than any 9 to 5er could ever understand. So image my excitement to learn that I had not one, not two, but three days off over the 4th of July weekend. Filled with joy to not be on the clock for the whole long weekend, I began to explore my options of what to do with myself for this mini vacation. After discussing with my best friend Liz, I decided to head down to beautiful Los Angeles (again) for the holiday.<br />I flew out on Friday after work, and got in rather late due to some sort of gate issue. Meet up with a whole welcoming group and headed back to Calabases for a relaxing night at Liz's.<br />Saturday we were up early and off to the baseball fields to get a scrimmage softball game in. It was hot out, which was a very nice change from the drab 50somethings it had been in Seattle. In fact, Liz got a funky tank top tab line.</span><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-family:Helvetica;font-size:medium;"><br />After shagging some balls and putting up some big sticks we went and got some sushi to tide over our hunger. Yum yum yum.</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-family:Helvetica;font-size:medium;"><br />The rest of the day was spent at the beach getting a tan, playing pick up games of soccer, discovering wild marina life (aka jellyfish), and enjoying each other's company.</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-family:Helvetica;font-size:medium;"><br /><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiX6HmTVvZYVCTQ4w2J4u5y35ah9ul57EIpiq91SBssdEv-D7n0-a2SULpO0IxVXxP8rlRtzHczfD-lEPmjOC5pEjZTGU9pYIDnOT0N8k9s_1Ta7V3TW8vKiZ339glzphrbfR0gUoOPoho/s400/DSCN0212.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5519039736731689458" /><br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-family:Helvetica;font-size:medium;">Sunday, Independence Day, was spent pool side at Liz's apartment building. We, and by we I mean "the boys", barbecued up hot dogs and hamburgers while us ladies worked on our tans. We had dancing and swimming, and a grand singing of our national anthem. I was a very proud American that day!</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-family:Helvetica;font-size:medium;"><br /><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQLA-U2Np3gLx3_doJRXKhM37erQ7WeDubhJG3jv7H-vR19Bj3qdi86FYqvDr8IwFNeEHaFhK9oZPd9B8VuE_e5KBs7-RhhURW2S4F0x-0Wyt98TZyHd6Azbr3CU99UVGi9WvpMIrfJII/s400/DSCN0250.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5519039756227062226" /><br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-family:Helvetica;font-size:medium;">I unfortunately had to leave at 6am in the morning, which I have vowed to never book a flight that leaves that early ever again. All and all it was a fantastic way to spend my few days off.<br /><br />God bless America.</span></div>EMillerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13987287452528560521noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6505883685496314758.post-26744199353449148602010-06-27T16:35:00.003-06:002010-06-27T16:55:20.785-06:00Summers PastThis is the first summer of my life that isn't a vacation. It hasn't felt like any of the other 22 sunny seasons I lived through. It hasn't really felt like summer at all. Blame it on the extra long spring Seattle has been suffering, but in reality, I think it's because of what I like to call "the real world effect".<div><br /></div><div>The real world effect is the little pains and joys I am slowly learning about growing up and life outside of that of a student. All my life summer meant freedom, relaxing, and day after day fun. Now, it's just another work week. I am still trying to figure out where June went? Life is flying by so quickly.</div><div><br /></div><div>I miss being a kid. Summer when I was thirteen consisted of running through sprinklers, bike rides to go buy ice cream, and night games with the neighbor kids. Of course there was the dreaded "chores" we would be given, but even those don't seem so bad now. Summer was weekend get-aways with the fam, Camp Perkins with Liz, sleep-outs on the tramp, and daily adventures with Nate.</div><div><br /></div><div>My whole life I have been so excited to grow up, to be mature and adult. For the first time, this summer, I wish I was 13 again. So enjoy that ice cold lemonade, sunset stroll around the block, and Dad's burger hot off the grill for as long as you can.</div>EMillerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13987287452528560521noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6505883685496314758.post-39839772729673795612010-06-11T00:24:00.003-06:002010-06-11T00:34:23.868-06:00Sass in Sasquatch<div>Here is a video of our Sasquatch 2010 experience.</div><div><br /></div><iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.blogger.com/video.g?token=AD6v5dxB73lGWyjAQV17nvsClmmeDlgHUkBfzzUyGI_ZId3WjnduF5C2QF54VvbDuYJ_YLFHWni9EE64az-ukZ2FOQ' class='b-hbp-video b-uploaded' frameborder='0'></iframe>EMillerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13987287452528560521noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6505883685496314758.post-36732957777063685522010-06-07T13:40:00.003-06:002010-06-07T14:05:15.107-06:00Music Monday 6.7<div>Thirsty?
